How To Profit From PPC Using Affiliate Marketing

by: Carl Andrews
PPC (Pay Per Click) is projected to account for around $8 billion dollars spent per year by 2008. It is a major force in Internet marketing and it is the way that a large percentage of affiliate marketers drive people to their own or their Merchants websites.

Below is a brief overview of how PPC works.

PPC providers like google create listings and rate them based on a bid amount the advertiser is willing to pay for each click. Potential Advertisers bid against one another in order to receive higher ranking for a specific keyword or phrase. The advertiser who is the highest bidder for a certain keyword or phrase will then get his or her word ranked as number 1 for that phrase or term. These ads then will appear prominently on the results pages based on the dollar amount bid that has been agreed per click. Ads will generally be either down the right side, the top or the bottom of the page, or sometimes all three.

The way affiliates make money from this is by promoting a product they make a commission on and if the customer who has clicked on their ad then goes on to buy the product, they will then get paid. This arrangement can be very lucrative for both the merchant and the affiliate since the affiliate is in total control of the Ad spend and can adjust his campaign and keywords as he likes. Where as the merchant only pays the commission on the sale, even if the affiliate has sent 10,000 potential customers their way, if none have actually bought the product, the merchant does not have to pay the affiliate one single cent.

The reason most affiliate marketers incorporate PPC into their money making campaigns is because it is one of the easiest ways to make money. Other ways include article marketing and blogs etc. But all these generally require longer to make money from and are less in your control. Whereas with PPC you can chose a product today and be making money virtually straight away from it.

One of the main things you have to be careful of when doing PPC is that you watch your ad spend. One rule of thumb is if you start a new campaign and you haven’t made a sale by the time your ad spend has reached the amount you would have made on commission, then pause the ad campaign and try and figure out what is going wrong.

Lastly, don’t make the mistake that a lot of newbies to PPC do and that is, do not bid on the broad keywords. For example: if you are promoting a product about dog training, don’t bid on the key words “dog products” as you will be getting clicks from people interested in anything to do with dog products. You have to try and be as specific as possible. There is a skill that you have to acquire to get your ad in from of the biggest amount of people but they have to be targeted as must likely having an interest in the particular product you are promoting.
